How exam percentage is calculated
Your overall percentage is the total marks you scored divided by the total marks available, multiplied by 100.
Percentage = (sum of marks obtained ÷ sum of maximum marks) × 100
For example, say you scored 80 out of 100 in English and 45 out of 50 in Maths. Your marks add up to 125 and the maximums add up to 150, so your percentage is 125 ÷ 150 × 100 = 83.33%.
Notice that this is not the same as averaging the two subject percentages (80% and 90%), which would give 85%. Adding the totals first gives each mark its true weight, so a subject with more marks counts for more.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate percentage when subjects have different maximum marks?
Add up the marks you scored in every subject, add up the maximum marks of every subject, then divide the first total by the second and multiply by 100. Enter each subject with its own maximum in the calculator and it does this for you.
Should I average my subject percentages or use total marks?
Using total marks is the usual way to get an overall percentage, and it is what this calculator does. Averaging subject percentages gives the same answer when every subject has the same maximum, but it can differ when they don’t. Check which method your school or institute uses.
How do I convert marks out of a total that isn’t 100 into a percentage?
Divide your marks by the total and multiply by 100. For example, 36 out of 40 is 36 ÷ 40 × 100 = 90%. In the calculator, type your marks in “Marks obtained” and change the “Out of” field to the total for that subject.
How does this calculator round the result?
Results are rounded to two decimal places, for example 83.33%. If you type marks higher than the maximum for a subject, they are counted as the maximum, and the calculator tells you when a row can’t be used, for example negative marks or a missing “Out of” value. Grade boundaries, pass marks and any extra rounding rules vary by board and institute, so this tool shows the plain percentage only.
