How CGPA converts to percentage
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is your average grade points on a scale, usually out of 10. To turn it into a percentage, you multiply it by a conversion factor.
Percentage = CGPA × factor
For example, with the 9.5 factor, a CGPA of 9.2 gives 9.2 × 9.5 = 87.4%. To go the other way, divide: 87.4 ÷ 9.5 = 9.2 CGPA.
9.5 is the multiplier CBSE published for its CGPA system. Other boards and universities publish their own conversion formulas, some of which are not a simple multiplication. Your institution's official formula always prevails, so use the factor it gives you.
If a factor would push the result past the top of the scale (above 100% or above 10 CGPA), the calculator caps the result at the scale maximum and says so.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
Multiply your CGPA by the conversion factor. With a factor of 9.5, a CGPA of 9.2 becomes 9.2 × 9.5 = 87.4%. Enter your CGPA and the factor in the calculator and it shows the working alongside the result.
Where does the 9.5 factor come from?
9.5 is the multiplier CBSE published for its CGPA system, which is why it is the default here. Other boards and universities publish their own conversion formulas, and some of them are not a simple multiplication. Your institution's official formula always prevails, so use the factor it specifies.
How do I convert percentage back to CGPA?
Divide the percentage by the same factor. With a factor of 9.5, 87.4% becomes 87.4 ÷ 9.5 = 9.2 CGPA. Switch the calculator to “Percentage to CGPA”, keep the factor, and type the percentage.
Why is a converted percentage only approximate?
A CGPA summarises your grades on a scale, and a conversion factor turns it into a percentage with one fixed rule, so the figure is an equivalent, not the marks you scored. Different institutions use different factors or formulas, and some do not publish a conversion at all. For an application or a form, use the figure or formula the institution asks for, and treat this result as an estimate.
